Electrical Engineer

Interview

Details

Electrical Engineer
  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as electrical engineers.

Electrical engineers usually are assigned to the maintenance team, and we mainly carry out two tasks to help operate our plants: One is ordinary investment for new projects and the other is maintenance of existing facilities. Ordinary investment refers to developing and introducing new plant projects and new facility systems. Currently, our Pohang plant is implementing the carcass line U-2.4 separation project, the initial stage of carbon black process. The project starts by estimating the quantity of feedstock. The production division usually sets the basic framework for projects and sends it to the maintenance team. Quantity estimation is mainly divided into purchasing instruments and valves, implementing instrumental and electrical construction, procuring electrical and DCS panels, and executing other grounding and lighting construction. First, we examine instrument schedule to select measuring instrument and valves, and choose the type and material of the measuring instrument suitable for each process and location. The price and level of performance of instruments can vary to a great extent, so its important to select the most suitable measuring instrument. Also, designing of electrical panels and cables according to the list of power machinery is needed. For automatic operation, DCS (PLC) work needs to be done. Then we start designing extra grounding and lighting construction.

We can project the quantity of feedstock through such process, and when we start implementing the project, we make purchases by submitting purchase requisition, selecting measuring instrument, and making technical review. Purchased goods are inspected if needed, then they are installed for pilot test.

Maintenance and repair include preventive inspection and diagnosis of existing plants to ensure they operate without issues. Whats important is to quickly normalize plants when accidents occur and set measures to prevent recurrence.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your work?

Maintenance requires knowledge and technical capacity. I believe that a certification of Engineer Electricity is very helpful, and as for instrumentation, universities usually do not offer any programs in their curriculum. So, OJT or training after joining the company is needed. In addition, as we, electrical engineers, deal with maintenance of both new projects and existing facilities, it is vital to equip ourselves with abilities for problem-solving, and capacity for comprehending and making a quick decision about how to approach issues and solve problems when accidents occur.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

Ten years from now, I think I will be working as an engineer who builds and manages plants with the accumulated expertise on generators and electrical power systems in the power division following my career in the instrumentation division. People say that electrical engineers talk in blueprints. I hope to become an engineer who talks in blueprints keeping them close beside me, and who continues to learn on the field and in the office.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as an electrical engineer?

Seeing and learning on the field is more helpful for enhancing their capacities and careers. I want to advise people to earn experiences in plants and build careers while they are still new hires.

Mechanical Engineer
  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as mechanical engineers.

What we mainly do as mechanical engineers here at OCI are both directly and indirectly linked to productivity without being directly involved in the manufacturing process: Project investment, new facilities investment, facilities maintenance and repair. As the companys profit is closely related to the productivity of plants, mechanical engineers should predict and prevent troubles arising from the facilities, and immediately respond to unexpected situations. All of which are related to maintaining an optimal state of the processes to avoid any disruptions in the production process.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your job?

The most essential job skills for plant engineers are heavy sense of responsibility and creative thinking. Without a strong sense of responsibility when resolving problems and investing for facilities, we cannot guarantee stable plant operation. In addition, I believe creative thinking allows us to aptly respond to the rapidly changing reality in the 21st century where changes are difficult to predict.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

Those who have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the mechanical engineering field are suitable for the job of mechanical engineers. I hope to become a mechanical engineer of high economic value to OCI. I will continue to grow and gain experiences in the field. I also want to become a helpful senior member and a role model for the junior members of our company, cultivating their talents based on my experiences and expertise.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers are indispensable in our current world, and surely will be of important assets in the future as well. If you continue to work hard and concentrate on the path you choose with pride and self-esteem, you will surely achieve your dreams and will not regret it.
